Just as Kasane is to the north east top most corner of Botswana, Shakawe is in the north west corner of Botswana.
With a population of 10,000 people Shakawe is located at the border with Namibia and offers the shortest route to Angola and the Caprivi Strip.
Shakawe is also located at the starting point of the Okavango river where it enters Botswana before spreading into the delta.
It is a fishing town where the residents mainly trade in fish and river products.
The residents are mainly the Hambukushu and Baherero who are inhabitants of the Okavango Delta along with other tribal groups such as Bayeyi and Basarwa.
Shakawe is also closest to the Tsodilo Hills, the spritual home of Batswana ancestors with the highest concentration of rock paintings.
